It's the climate control's interior temperature sensor. It works in
conjunction with the solar sensor (the little black gum drop on th top of the
dash, over the defroster outlet) to help the ECU decide on the hot/cold
regulation.

Earlier Audis with climate control (including the A6) used two temp sensors
to arrive at a decision on temp regulation.  The newest systems (A4, A8) use
a combination of temperature and sun load.
