First time in ten years? That's pretty good. Mine has left me stranded
at least four times in fourteen years. The best time was in the
rotary (traffic circle for non-England, non-New England people) on
the Alewife brook parkway (route 2 east, 3 south, 16 west, all one road)
in Fresh Pond, Cambridge during rush hour. Not only are you mad that
you are stranded, everyone else is mad at you too! One kind soul in
a VW helped me push the car out of the road. He said that he would get
out his tools and help me fix it if he wasn't late for class.

Seriously though, sounds like a fuel problem. Fuel pump, or fuel pump
relay. That was what caused these symptoms for me. My fuel pump
relay gets very hot due to old connections, eventually toasting
the relay module semiconductor guts. Keep those high current
connections clean. Other possibilities, control pressure regulator,
or a temperature sensor fooling the computer into thinking that
the engine is warmer than it is.
