Actually,all the 80/90 cars from the B3 generation had the tank mounted
vertically, between the rear seat back and the trunk.  I believe there were
two versions of the tank; one with a notch for the ski sack.  This
positioning of the fuel tank also explains the lack of a split/folding rear
seat back and the lack of depth to the trunk.
