The '87 5k-S without spark at the coil
To all,
Here's the non-mechanic who is trying to take responsibility for the care
of his Audi -- I'm forced to to do this because I cannot bear to see my
car become 'monkey wired' and destroyed, a car I totally enjoy.
Thanks to the Q-List mail, in general, and the specific suggestions and
comments I received, I am trying my best and have taken the following
actions: 1. become a student of the 5k-S (its a little scary), 2. ordered
a Bentley Manual (received on Wednesday) and 3. followed the Mr.
Mentley's instructions from page 28.52.
Now, I desperatley need the guidance of the Q-List Advisary Board.
The Bentley Subject: Ignition coil (with power stage), checking.
1. Voltag at the battery .............................. 12.39 volts.
2. Voltage between terminals 1 and 2 on the "ignition
coil power stage" .................................. 12.13 volts
3. Voltage between terminals 2 and 3 (engine cranking -- I smell gas when
I do this) can change randomly from approx. 1.66 volts to 1.99 volts.
The Bentley says the minimum should be 2.00 volts and with a range
from 2.34 to 2.44 volts.
What do you think of this?
The Bentley says I should check the wiring between terminal 2 of the
connector and terminal 16 of the "electronic ignition control unit,"
according to the wiring diagram. If there isn't a wire break I am to
check the ignition coil.
MY PROBLEM: I don't know where to find the ELECTRONIC IGNITIN CONTROL
UNIT(EICU). I also can't fine the electric diagram in the manual.
Checked on the pricing of coils . . .
VW people said the Passat and Audi coil are the same for my car.
Passat price = $85.74 (Canadain)
Audi price = $127.03 (Canadian)
What are your thoughts on this?
I really need to find that EICU. Any comments or rec. will be
appreciated.
Thanks,
Larry
