Actually the A4 owners manual recommends that you either wax the wheels, or
coat them with petroleum jelly.  Since it seems to me like coating them with
vaseline would make them a magnet for dirt and dust, I wax mine.  The wheels
are a simple, elegant design, so there aren't a lot of tiny nooks and
crannies, and waxing them is very simple and quick, even with normal liquid
or paste car wax.  The results look terrific and it seems to make the brake
dust easier to wash off.
