Quantum Syncro questions

HI all! I've been reading the postings on this list for about 1 week and am
pleased to see the interest in the Audi Quattro. I owned an 86 4000 CS
sedan (model closeout prior to the introduction of the 80 series). I traded
this for a 95 VW Passat GLX/VR6.

I also own a VW Quantum Syncro Wagon -- 86 if you believe the owners
manual/87 if you believe the registration. The Syncro has the inline 5 from
the 5000 series, 5spd manual, approxmately 90k miles on the odometer.

I would like to understand the differences in the VW syncro system vs the
4000 series quattro system, of similar vintage. VW and Audi use a lot of
common parts -- how much of the syncro drivetrain is 'borrowed'?

Also, I have a mechanical clicking sound that comes from the right read
quadrant of the synco. The sound is similar to the beginnings of a cv joint
failure in an older beetle. The clicking is regular at constant speed, and
increases with increasing speed. Is this a cv joint failing? Can mere
mortals (mostly thumbs here) do this work or is it time to visit my local
VW/Audi dealer (Holbert's in Warrington, PA).

Lastly, how difficult is it to replace the 'mouse-fur' trimming (the weather
seal) surrounding the sun-roof panel in the Quantum. Mine has decided to
take up residence inside the sliding roof mechanism. Duct tape works ok to
hold the water out, but does not do much for appearance.

Any comments or thoughts greatly appreciated.
