Power Steering Pump Fixed???

Well, my power steering pump leaked last week, it was from one of the cylinder
caps (have the big phillips head screw in them). There is an o-ring under the
caps that gives out. Took out the pump and replaced all eight o-rings. This is a
pain in the *ss, you need to use an impact hammer device with a 3/4" screwdriver
blade (otherwise known as a chisel) to get them undone.

Well, it worked....for a while. Got on the highway, blew one of the o-rings (it
squirmed out). Penosin everywhere! It ended up leaking from the only one that
was accessible without removing the pump. Replaced it once......twice....then it
lasted for about 40 miles, then BOOM, penosin everywhere.

Took the pump out last night, replaced it again, but took care to seating it
properly. Also found another one on the bottom trying to squirm out. Replaced
that one.

Drove 60 miles this morning, no problems (except that the engine compartment
needs to get degreased from penosin).

Do I have bets on how long it will last? I'm skeptical that it will last at
least until about 5 miles from Lime Rock on Sunday. Then BOOM, penosin will be
everywhere.

Parts bought:

o-rings, about $10
penosin, 2 quarts, about $38
chisel for tool, $7
hammer impact wrench, $24

Let's see, a new pump is about $300, but I would still need one quart of penosin
at $19. So that's $319 to $79 (tools included), but it will probably fail again
and I got to spend about 6-8 hours fixing it so far!

I love to inflict pain on myself!
