Re: radiator cardboard

As per giving the Aux Rad the boot, I gave mine the ass end of a chevy
Lumina, (ouch) I will see if it is needed when I get it back from the body
shop, others I have spoken to say no, they also say the 4000Q rad is a bit
bigger and a bolt in (Can anybody confirm this?). I will think about it if
I run hot with out the Aux. As I have no AC don't think it will be missed,
   considering the $175 replacement cost.

Ironically, A/C typically runs the engine cooler! This non-obvious result
is due to the fact that in the "early" Audis (early '80s vintage, anyways)
they just lock the radiator fan "ON" (the "hurricane force" speed, in my
'83 UrQ) when the A/C is engaged, thus "supercooling" the radiator as a
byproduct of cooling the A/C condenser unit [typically mounted] in front
of the radiator, thus always providing the engine with ample cool coolant
to keep it at the bottom end of the thermostat's temp range.

Later models are I think smarter about not running the fan(s) when not
really necessary . . .
