It really is quite convienient on the new fords to just be able to pull a 
fuse, kill the digital dash and keep the mileage low. I know of one case where 
a guy swapped a chip, went from over 200k miles to under 100k miles and got 
$6700 more in trade in!!!. That was one valuable chip!!!
BTW - I do not approve of this. I told the person I just sold an 81 4k5+5 to 
that the mileage was about 70k higher than the broken odo read. But it would 
be nice to get the full 3 years on a 3yr/36k warranty!!!

There's an article in this or last month's Top Gear (BBC's car program's
magazine equivalent - a fun read, usually) about odometer tampering.
Apparently, there's nothing on the market today that's tamper proof. The
electronic odometers are all the easier to do once you figure out the
basic software.

Actually I think the crime is misrepresenting mileage to deceive
customer at
time of sale.  Remember, he wants to do what I did - run a used odo
*ahead*
to where his vehicle truly is.  High mileage is a point of pride not
embarassment fur us, ness pah?  too bad about the electric style.

What triggers the electronic odo?  Could you try pulsing it?  send a
stream
of bits into it at equivalent of 1000 mph, still a bit slow but you've
got
all night?
