passing CALIF. emissions with NY car, tough?

Hi all :)

My '88 5000tq and I may be moving to California, and I was curious if any
of you had moved a non-california-emission Audi to California before.  How
difficult or costly are the modifications?  It would be nice if I could
have my trustworthy/reliable mechanic here bring it up to snuff, but he
has no emission checking equipment.
