He he he he , I heard that about oil once too, from another team - they
were sponsored by an oil company, so they put Mobil One into the
sponsors' oil cans before the race so that it would look like they wer
runnign their sponsor's product.
With regard to the S*itfires, a friend of mine who is a fuel
systems engineer pointed out once that the ceramic insulator is smooth.
He figured that Splitfire found an unused batch of '30s era spark plugs,
because spark plugs have had corrugated ceramics fro many years. It helps
prevent voltage leakage to ground, by virtue of its greater surface
distance from the positive electrode to ground.
With regard to platinum plugs, another friend of mine used to
work in Champion's R&D lab in Toledo, and he told me that there was veyr
littel difference between platinums nad _good_ regular plugs, just that
they lasted longer. I think however, that more finicky engines, such as
full racing engines, 2-strokes, and rotaries can be more sensitive to
plug variations.
