I did something similar when I installed my K&N a year ago. I simply
cut away the lower front of the airbox on the side away from the
engine. In a stock configuration, I don't think that it makes much
difference, but when you combine things like 2.25" exhaust, free-flow
cat, high-rpm fuel enrichment, etc. it does add something. (Besides,
there's something to be said for the growl that develops when you hit
the WOT switch.)

Just make sure you have a _very_ good air filter in place. This thing
will now suck up boulders, fuzzy animals, and children under 50 lbs!
I've gotten in the habit of cleaning the K&N every 3 months (~6,000
miles) or at a minimum, shaking out the larger debris.

HTH!
