To keep or not to keep (89 200q)
Hey everyone..
I may have an interesting offering for me or possibly even for any of you.
Talked to my father yesterday and he seems like he wants to get rid of the Q.
Car in question is a 89 200q (10v) with 145,000 miles on it. Pearl white with
Black interior. Here is a somewhat comprehensive list of current problem with
the car:
Mechanical:
(1) Coolant temp sensor is shot
(2) idle control thing-a-ma-jig on the left side of the linkage needs to be
fixed. At least that is what I think is the culprit in my erratic idle control.
It'll idle high and when I tap the throttle, it'll come back to 800 rpm. P.S.
thanks to Mr.Wong for noticing this problem before it became a problem! :)
(3) cruise is gone (it happened at the same time as the idle control
thing-a-ma-jig.. which could mean something or nothing at all)
(4) rear struts need replacement
(5) Air filter hose needs replacement. The hose in front of the airbox.
(6) leaky (although not too bad) pS pump, but don't they all. Not gobbling up
tons of fluid yet.. but need to add a gulp of pentosin every couple of weeks or
so.
(7) LCD display still needs to be fixed (I know Dr.Bob.. I just haven't gotten
to it yet).
(8) Valves are starting to clickty-clack when cold. Need adjustment.
(9) Windshield fluid pump needs to be checked. I'm getting very low flow.
Possible a crimped hose or something.. I haven't even bothered to look for it
yet.
Cosmetic:
(1) some parking lot acne with a couple dings in the left rear quarter panel
around the tail light. Dad-o backed against a tree in 91 or so. It isn't
horrendous.. and the paint didn't scratch off... just put some dings in the
area.
(2) some scratches in the hood, not too bad, but I notice them. A result of
someone using a bad snow brush on the hood. (nice job dad!)
(3) driver side leather seat is starting to tear a bit. It's comfortable as
hell though.
(4) some funky chemical my dad was hauling around spilled and bleached a big
spot on the carpeting in the rear.. It's covered by the floormats.. but it's
still there.
Recent repairs:
(1) New Clutch MC
(2) New Clutch SC
(3) New Timing belt
(4) New A/C blower
(5) New Front Struts (nothing fancy.. Audi Stock... boo..hiss)
(6) New RF wheel bearing
(7) New Fuel Lines
(8) Brake job.. including calipers and rotors
(9) new RF CV boot
(10) Four new tires.. nothing fancy.
(10) there's a box-load of receipts for other repairs and maintainance in my
room.. this short list is just off the top of my head
Oil/Filter changes have been made regularly since new, religiously changed at
3k Miles. Not that I think this means anything significant, but the oil still
comes out fairly golden after 3k miles.
So.. my father wants to know if we should sell it or if we should keep it. If
we keep it, then I'll probably end up with it. If we sell it.. I'd rather have
it find a new home with one of you guys then anybody else. Oh incidentally,
we've owned the car since new.
Right now this is academic, until I sit down and talk this out with the old
man.. but if anyone is interested, get in contact with me. I don't have a price
yet, so if you have one that sounds reasonable.. let me know. But realize that
the decision hasn't been confirmed to sell it yet. Basically, because I'm not
sure if I want the car.
If we sell the car, I'll end up with my 91 golf with 80K miles on it. I think
the Q can make it to 200K miles no problem. But I have a major fear that I'll
be spending many more hours working on it, like I was working on it today. I
need a car to get me through grad school.. which I haven't even started yet.
What do you all think? Sell or keep?
Right now, I'm somewhat inclined to keep it. Bearing in mind that for the next
50 K miles, the car will probably need 1K to 2K worth of repair. That's cheaper
than a new car.. but I can see myself installing window regulators, Fuel pumps,
Brake Pressure accumulators, and all sorts of stuff... being on the list sure
makes me appreciate the creation of the four rings.. but it also scares me a
little hearing about all the problems.
So what do I do.. any advice?
