I had something like this in my old Audi 5k.  It turned out that one of my 
motor mounts had deteriorated.  Depending on motor motion the engine mount 
would shift, causing weird sensations through the shifter.  With the 5 cyl 
engine, the motor mounts are a critical part of the NVH (Noise, Vibration & 
Harshness) tuning, used to damp out the uneven firing pattern of the 
inherently unbalance 5 cylinder.  When one of the motor mounts goes or is 
going, the vibrations are transmitted much more directly. YMMV.
