4 pin temp sensor

I have been tinkering with the ur-quattro a bit, and have turned up
some coolant in the 4 pin connector boot. From past net history,
I seem to remember the failure mode for these sensors is the
coolant temperature gauge doesn't work correctly, right?

This sensor seems to be working fine, the coolant gauge
is reporting a temperature. The only problem seems to be
that the sensor is leaking coolant. Is this also a failure mode?
And the replacement is a 3 pin sensor. Which pin did they
eliminate, 15 power, coolant temp to ECU, coolant gauge
signal or coolant temp to AC head.
