Re: PORSCHE BOXTER AND OR 1990 COUPE QUATTRO
Recommendation:
1) Keep the Coupe, drop the American "stoplight burnout" attitude, & keep
your foot planted on the gas. Once practically any of those mini-vans gets
into second, you should be passing them (my Coupe has good acceleration
in third & fourth once I get above 4000 RPM).
2) If only two seats bother you with Porsches, buy a '92-93 C2 (earlier ones
had no head gaskets, caused premature failures). Should sell for low-mid
$30k. On Boxster, don't forget you owe the Gummint luxury tax. Speculation
on what you can get for the Boxster is a gamble, to me. Get the C2, roll
the windows down, open the sunroof, and throw the rug rats or dog in the
back seat. Besides, then you can enter the Porsche Club race track driver's
education events without butchering your car (Boxster would require a roll
bar).
3) The April '96 issue of "European Car" had an article on a company making
a 2.6 liter conversion for the 20V engine - largely a stroker crank and a
slightly bored out block. They didn't have hard numbers, but subjectively
felt car was much quicker than stock. company was called Eurospec Sport;
phone nos. were 408/848-4203 and 408/848-2145. Seems like a better
choice than a turbo with associated heat and replumbing/rewiring problems,
plus turbo lag.
Wonder if anyone on the list has done this conversion?

So- you can see the problem. I own a very cherry 1990 Coupe Quattro
(pearl/black with 54K miles and still under warranty) which I am working on
upgrading. Ultimately, I don't have enough money ($12K) to get the
horespower I would like out of the car. It is a dog, and I'm tired of Dodge
Cravans beating me off the line. But it has one of the most beautiful butts
in the business, and I love the way it feels (or will feel, once Eric F gets
his act together and ships me some shocks!). The 2 seater is a bit
impractical as an only car.
What do I do? Keep a rare car, take advantage of the Boxter deal and give
my
Coupe to a lover on the List? Move to Europe and buy an S2? Sue Audi for
not importing the good stuff? Buy the boxter, sell it for $50K, drop a 200T
engine in my coupe? Buy a Ford?
I need therapy.
