CQ Fault Codes

Q-listers:

I took my CQ to the shop for my previously mentioned cold start problem.
 They tried to pull the fault codes, but came up empty.  My mechanic said
their tool can't pull all the codes and recommended that I go to the dealer
and have them check it there.  Apparently the dealer has a specialized
computer that can pull additional codes on the newer cars.  Does all this
sound accurate?

Does the climate control system give you the codes for the ECU, etc.?  If so,
which codes do I check?

My mechanic is sure that something is wrong and thinks the "control unit" is
probably reverting to default mode.  This would explain (I guess) why the car
starts on the 2nd crank and seems to run fine after that.  Any other ideas?

TIA for your feedback.  I'd like to get to the bottom of this before I go to
the dealer.  If I've got a bad ECU...
