Narrower Wheels 'n Tyres

Here is a slightly different problem for the collective wisdom of the
group. I am currently trying to "reduce" the wheel and tyre combination on
my '85 ur-q. I should point out the car has had a wee bit of body work done
to accomodate the current running gear... At the moment the car sports
285/40 R15 tyres on 10.5 inch BBS RS wheels. Ideally I would like to run a
tyre width between 225-245 on a 15" rim.

I had hoped to be able to change the shells on the BBS RS wheels (they are
the modular 3 piece design), however after spending some time talking with
BBS I have discovered that the wheels are a special "lot" incompatible with
standard shells. Apparently my wheels have 30 bolts holding them together
instead of the standard 20. It took some time for BBS to agree that they
had actually built them, and after finally admitting they had, they
     couldn't offer different size shells.

Does anyone know if Porsche use the same 5 bolt wheel pattern on 911's as
Audi use on their 5 bolt wheels? I am considering purchasing 56mm wheel
spacers from Automotion and using 9" sport quattro Ronals or some other
make of wheel in place of the BBS wheels. The spacers are required because
the BBS wheels have a 4.5" outer shell (required to properly fill the wheel
arch). I realize this scenario will put a lot of stress on the wheel
bearings - but this has to be balanced against the cost of 285/40 tyres
(only one manufacturer!) and their significant rolling resistance/drag.

Another option I am considering is going to one of the "custom" wheel
builders found in the back pages of ec and pricing custom wheels although I
     can only imagine the cost.

Any suggestions or recommendations would be appreciated.

And for those people who would flame me for destroying the lines of an ur-q
with a few wee body mods, hey the car was that way when I bought it, and I
think it looks really cool as does everyone I have spoken to who has seen
the car - it's definitely not a Treser!

     Thanks and regards, Mike
