octane

tidbit of humble experience re previous thread on gasoline grades.
I had switched from premium to 89 type regular, with no observable change in
performance. Happy $avings. So last week I decided to take the next step
and tried a tankful of 87 octane. Woe is me! The car would run, but
couldn't get out of its own way. Example, going 65 in 4th on highway -
depressing gas pedal just causes more noise. Shifting into third causes
slowdown! No high rev power at all.
BTW, the first thing I did was climb a ramp in second and I got some tasty k
-nocking at 4200 RPM, which is about where the power dropped off when not
pushing it. Next day, cold engine, barely started, and I bought some octane
boost crap, since I didn't have any toluene on the shelf (gasp!) and things
returned to normal.

PS should I bore out my throttle body (or send it to Schaumberg) for
increased fuel economy and more power? (l5 NA injun)
