Ed,
This is VERY true. I have had the distinct pleasure of driving
cars on GM Proving ground roads where they have samples of virtually
every asphalt/concrete road type in existence. There is one loop in
Mesa that is about 5 miles long, with three lanes, where they have a
different road surface every 500' or so. You can get a feel for how the
tires sound really fast with this kind of repeatability, and consistency
in the test. They also have alot of other very interesting roads. It
really is a great place to test a car's capabilities. I was in an LH at
Chrysler's Poving grounds a couple years ago. The driver was a
racer-friend of mine. He was sliding this Intrepid through big sweeping
turnsat 75 - 80 mph with all four wheels sliding! Then he went through
one at over 75, and there was a HUGE bump in the middle of the turn! That
LH just soaked it up, and kept going! Yeah, it slid sideways a little,
but it was all very controllable.
Boy I'd love to get my Quattro on the track to see how it
compares. I think it would do OK compared to our new Caddys.
