Ur-UrQ spotted
Hi fellow Audians,
Yesterday when I came home from work I spotted a strange looking
contraption in military colours in front of my house. On closer inspection,
this appeared to be a VW Iltis, the jeep-type vehicle from which the
Quattro system we all know and love was derived. I'd never seen one 'in the
sheetmetal' before, and searched around a bit for the owner. He didn't know
much about the vehicle, he'd bought it cheaply from an army surplus sale.
Apparently the Dutch army had a couple of these around a couple of years
ago. It looked in very good shape for an early-eighties car.
Short of getting the car up on ramps, there was no way of getting near the
AWD system for a closer inspection. The guy *did* say that it was very good
off the road, and even on the road it was quite OK. Apparently getting
parts is easy from your VW dealer, but it takes a couple of days for parts
that are particular to the Iltis.
It looked kind of awkward from the front to me, because it's made to slide
along bad tracks with a 'boat-like' front end. Sort of a cross between a VW
Kubelwagen and a DKW Munga. The rear end is straight Jeep-like stuff. I
made some photographs of the car (don't know if they turn out well though,
because it was getting dark).
Sorry for the waste of bandwidth for those of you not interested.
Bye,
Tom
