I did an Alpine in my '88 5ktq.  Alpine head unit and Alpine amp in trunk.  Not
quit what someone out there is doing.

I ran new wires for the rear speaks from the trunk Alpine amp.  The fronts are
still running through the stock X-overs for now but have new wires from the
trunk amp.

The stock rear amp is bypassed.  I think you need to run new wires from the new
head unit to the rear speakers.  Bypass the rear amp allthogether, and all the
associated wires.  Pretend there are no wires already there.  Does that help?
