grit around spark plugs

Getting all the last minute maintance done before winter comes on my '86 
5KCSTQ.  I was going to replace the spark plugs too.  I was just curious 
if anyone can suggest a good way to remove that gravel that builds up 
just above the threads.  Everytime I remove a spark plug I knock 
some into the engine. Gravel no matter how small don't mix well with 
100,000rpm turbos, let alone valves.
