Remind me not to speed over there.

Of course, the "X month's salary" makes sense. I've always wondered
when the US would do something like this. A fixed fine of, say, $100
means very different things to a factory worker supporting a family
on $8/hour than a lawyer or doctor making $300K/year.

That concept is morally bankrupt and TOTALLY ABSURD! The punishment must fit the crime. Punishment is and must remain totally unrelated to the means of the criminal. Do the crime - do the time. No more, no less. Here in the US we have a legal and constitutional requirement of _equal protection_ under the law. Same for me, same for you and same for bubba.
