RE: Snow tires

Talking about snow tires - the haka NRW is a far better tire than the Blizzak, I have used both on my V8 and have found the NRW to be the best high speed, mixed dry and snow tire I have ever used. A close second if you are going to use large (wide) tires were Yokos new oval tire technology tire which I use on my 911 (225/50x16) they work but not as well as the nokias

I've been trying to follow the thread on snow tires recently. The
Continental
Ecos are NOT going to cut it this winter for Mom's new A6. Especially with
the
wicked upstate winters and country roads that she drives on here.

I knew that all-seasons are essentially a bad solution to seasonal tires.
So.. none of that. I think I've come across 3 names that stick in my mind
from
the list: Nokias NRWs, Michelin Alpins, and Hakkas.

I would like to not use the Audi-wheels and purchase a set of steel wheels
for
the winter time. I've had a good experience with the Tire Rack, but they
don't
seem to carry these types of snows. I am kind of reluctant to call a shop in
WI
that I've never heard about before.

Noise isn't really a factor. Price is a factor. The tires don't have to have
stud capability but I can't see why not, so that's a plus. Tires with
micro-pore technology aren't a good idea because.. well.. we're not talking
vermont here. There will be quite a bit of Asphalt driving.. and after a
year
of wear we'll probably end up with a cruddy all season tire because the
micro-pores are worn off. So.. the Blizzaks don't sound wise.

So what I'm looking for is real snow-tires from a reputable company at a
 respectable price. Any suggestions?

If lots of dirt roads go with Nokia Hakapalieta 10's and over inflate 3-8lbs.
Fast asphalt driving dry and snow: Michelin Alpin 130 H rated
All around good long wearing Q-rated snow tire: Gislevad Nordicfrost.
Alot of people here swear by Hancook(sic) snows, and I think they're on
Thompson's TQC, but I haven't had 'em.

I've had the above tires, and the Alpin's are my favorites, except when it
was all dirt roads, and then the Haks won (pre Blizzak era). I hated the
Pirelli snows, and they wore out quickly. My local BAAS dealer stopped
offering them and switched to Gislevads.

I do lots of miles and VT twistie passes, and it ain't the driest snow on
earth here, don't cha know.

Call Discount Tire Direct. They don't stock the Nokia's, but do offer good
prices, including the steel rims, on the others.

Your local garage can order Nokia's from University Wholesalers in South
Burlington, VT. Call 802-658-7414. Nationally know, good prices, not to the
public.
