I suspect that the knock sensors are just piezoelectric microphones.
In an old Popular Science or some such rag, I recall reading that the
way you could check the operation of the knock sensor on GM cars was
to shine a timing light on the marks and then whack the engine block
with a hammer and see if the timing retarded for a bit. I haven't
tried it and don't know if the Audi gods would appreciate you whacking
their fine machinery with a hammer. But, it's a thought, sometimes...
