Re: Re: Radio Saga

Hi gang:

In my last report I described how Ray Calvo's suggestion of using
Radio Shack P/N 272-1154 lamps worked well for repairing the radio in
my 1988 90Q. (The lamps for the liquid crystal display and the
volume/bass/treble zone of the panel were out.) However, the color of
the new bare lamps did not match that of the other lamps which had a
reddish/amber filter. To correct it I covered the lamps with silicone
lamp filters. The ones I used were for larger T-1 3/4 (0.250 inch/ 6
mm dia.) lamps, but worked OK. They are available from Newark
Electronics, among others, and are made by APM. I used a red one for
the controls lamp. It was a close, but not exact match to the filters
Wiesbaden used for the lamps on the right hand side of the panel.
Nonetheless, the difference is negligible at night. For the liquid
crystal display, the red filter seemed to attenuate the brightness too
much for daytime use, so I used an amber filter. This makes it a
different color, but not unappealing. The filter numbers are:

     1813/2-R-5 (Newark 30F781) $0.41
     1813/2-A-2 (Newark 30F794) $0.41

There is a minimum order of $25.00 at Newark. To fill out the order, you might
want to order other electronic goodies useful for car repair, such as shrink
fit, contact cleaner, etc. Newark's number for ordering a catalog is
800.298.3133 ext 48. I have not checked on whether Radio Shack carries lamp
filters.
