Re: quattro-digest V3 #1119

Possible that the cable used to wind the window up & down is starting to go,
and will shortly snap (at least, that's what happened to me). Door can be
taken
off; main areas are the 3 Allen head bolts at the door pull (approx. 4mm hex;

trial fit a wrench on the rearmost bolt head you can just see at the rear
part
of the hand grip cutout). Bolts are LOOSENED, NOT REMOVED approx.
10 turns, then the door pull can be removed. You won't be able to see the
two bolts for the center and front part of the door pull (look underneath for
the
access holes) and getting at them is definitely a touchy-feely maneuver.
 With
the door pull off, you should see two large sheet-metal screws; remove them
and the screwsaround the outside of the door panel. Then LIFT THE DOOR
PANEL STRAIGHT UP to remove (DON''T pry it horizontally away from the
door).

With the panel off, you can now try to look at the Rube Goldberg arrangement
of the cable drive. I stared and stared at it, decided I wasn't up to the
task,
bolted everything back up, and had the dealer replace the cable.

Don't know if this is the exact cause, but if the window is noisy going up &
down, I suspect a cable on its last legs.

Fellow 90-91 Quattro Coupe owners......my car has been called on by the Audi

 Gods...for punishment!

The other evening, my brother-in-law, who we'll call Paul, because that's
his
name, slammed my passenger side door shut, (while the window was in its
rolled
down position) and I heard an awful noise like something snapped!!!!

I then proceeded to roll the window up (power windows of course) and bam
(the
sound of something metal smacking the glass) and a scratch was immediately
inscribed on my unblemished window's tint. I know it sounds like the window
regulator or a part of the mounting hitting my window every time I roll my
 window up or down.

 1. Now here's the question.... Have any of you had this same thing occur to
your car or is this something out of the ordinary??
My mechanic, who is very trustworthy btw, says it will cost much money(while

rubbing his fingers together, (in his guttorial German accent)).
 2. Is this type of repair reasonable for a above average home mechanic??
 3. Have any of you taken apart your doors before??
 4. Pain in the ass or what ??? >>
