Crankbolt - loosening & tightening

Hello Bob - sorry about this, but I have another question for you.
I can understand how using the starter can loosen the bolt, but how can
you tighten it up again? Car in 5th gear, stand on brakes, get
partner to stand on 3" extension pole? What does the transmission
think of the 400+ ftlbs torque? What about auto gearboxes?

Have you tried Graydon's technique of . . .
"It's a lot safer, cheaper and easier to stuff about four feet of a nylon
rope in the number one cylinder when its at BDC, and crank on the big
bolt. Works every time for me."

I would be afraid of blowing the head gasket.
