Griot's "Clay"

To anyone out there -

I might actually wax my car this year.  I've been receiving Griot's catalogs
for several years now and he's been advertising a clay that is used in
prepping the surface before waxing.  Has anybody actually used it and does it
work ??  I think I've got polution / water mark damage and I 'm not sure if
anything will correct that.  The car is a two stage metallic so I have no
desire to use something too strong and cut through the clear coat.
