I was starting to get a little nervous about the lifter clicking in my 
89 200q (146K miles), so I asked my trusty mechanic how much it would 
cost to have them adjusted. He said that they weren't adjustable, and 
that if the clicking went away in 20-30 minutes.. it was normal. I'm not 
sure if he's right about the adjustablility thing.. any commments?

The hydraulic lifters are auto adjusting and not servicable by a 
mechanic.  The tappet lifters(non hyd) contain a "shim" in the top of 
the bucket, that are adjustable or servicable.

Most Audi's after 1985, all have Hydraulic, Non servicable lifters.
The way to service them is to replace them!
