Phil is right, I should have added in the USA.

Glen, You and Trish may be right too. I was only reporting what the Pikes
Peak Hill Climb folks claim. My opinion is that the first motor sports race
occurred when the first two automobiles met on some dusty trail. 

But hey, this started as a Michelle Mouton post noting her achievement
driving a quattro up the big hill in record time. (beating Unser's quattro
time the previous year) - I live 30 mi. from there and missed both of them

ppihc references the Indy 500 as the oldest motorsports race. 

That one should be easy to settle. When did Indy first run? Mt. Wash was
1902 or 1903..... The first Indy was like in the 1920s or sumptin?
