German Automaker Sales

BMW topped the German firms in September sales by setting a record for the
month of 9,330 cars, up 21% from the 7,685 sold a year earlier. Volkswagen
said it enjoyed its best September in the U.S. in eight years, with sales of
12,687 new cars, up 22% from September 1995's 11,002 while Audi, VW's luxury
car division, reported U.S. sales of 1,875 for the month compared with last
year's sales of 1,395. Porsche posted a 58% increase in September sales,
selling 442 cars in the U.S. last month compared with 291 in the
year-earlier period. Mercedes sales will be reported later.
