removed mine and replaced the space with a subwoofer volume/gain control and mounted the remote for my car stereo...

Definately concur there. First thing my folks criticized in their new A6 was 
that the "cupholders couldn't hold any cups or cans!" Jeesh MA! That's where 
the optional cell-phone is supposed to fit.. it's *not* a cupholder. Current
function: Change tray. :)
