failed the test

I don't know if the remove oil fill cap test applies to all Audis or 
not.  But when my 87 4ks started to act up I gave it a try to see 
what would happen.  

Remove dipstick- nothing
remove oil fill cap- engine speeds up and runs smoother

This engine has 128K on it, start as soon as you hit the key, runs 
fine for about 10 sec. then starts to bog and run rough.  Other than 
this the engine seems to be in great shape (even clean) no oil leaks. 
 Still runs fine once you get going, just won't idle smooth.  Only 
other thing I have noticed is that the mileage has dropped somewhat, 
but not a major drop.

any and all thoughts/ideas will be greatly appreciated.
