reconstructed 86 5000CD turbo

Hi all: I have a question that hasn't been
asked before on this list. Non-US listers
can delete this email to save time.

I looked at an '86 5000CD turbo auto for
a grad student friend that was bought at
an auction by a body shop guy. The car was
totalled due to a minor but expensive to fix
front ender, according to him.

Has new hood, bumper, right front quarter
panel, head, valves, lifters, timing belt.

Car is fully loaded, power everything with
black leather. 94kmiles and 90% electricals
work. He is asking US$4000K in central Oregon.

Now Edmunds lists between $2500 and $3800
and I assume the $3800 figure is for a specimen
in good shape and one that hasn't been totalled.

The car is in good shape, no leaks in engine,
tranny and the power steering rack. Boost
gauge reads 1.4bar under max acceleration.
ABS seems flaky, but I might have turned it off.

Trouble is, what kind of a discount has to
be considered in buying a car that says
"reconstructed/reconditioned/totalled" on
the pink slip, keeping in mind future
resale?

Thanks. Tiaq htng@ece.orst.edu
