Actually, the new Passat **is** receiving the "virtual steering axis" front
suspension.

I think the new Passat will also have quattro available from early-on too.

I think what needs clarifying is that it is unlikely prices for the current
Passat will carry over to the new one. If I understand herr Piech, he
intends to move VW upmarket, with Audi also taking a step up. All the Audi
technology you will see on the new Passat will carry a price tag, it's just
that many things that are optional on a Passat now come standard on the A4.
I know this is blashemy but it is kind of like the loaded-up Honda vs.
standard Acura argument (with the all important distinction that Audis and
VWs are designed and built separately, whereas Hondas and Acuras are
essentially interchangeable).
So why bother to buy an Audi?
Of course exclusivity and service do have a price but those are not the only
reasons.
1. Audi will continue to be the test bed for new technologies, such as the
upcoming CVT. These will simply not be available through VW for a while.
2. Some things will remain exclusively Audi, such as turbocharged engines.
3. Audis are still closer to "sport sedans" in their chassis, suspension,
and seating settings (try saying that 3 times in a row).
4. Overall "quality" does not refer simply to luxury. Parts that go into Audis
are often overengineered compared to VWs and much more so than other
manufacturers. What percentage of Audis have clutches exceeding 100k miles?
**turbo** engines with well over 100k and no major engine repairs?
What about a chassis that feels rock solid after 10 years of hard driving?
It is possible that newer VWs will equal Audis in this area, but we will have
to wait and see.
I personally feel the new ranking at VW (Skoda, Seat, VW, and Audi in
ascending order) will benefit everyone. It will keep every division honest,
and working hard to make sure they are not upstaged by the one below. In
the end it will be up to the well informed consumer to decide.
