This got me to looking at other sanders (random orbit) and wondering which
would be good at polishing. It seems to boil down to speed range, and
herein lies the question. What is the best speed range when using the
large foam wheels that both Griot's and Imparts sell? Is it best @ 2000 -
2500 obm, or would it work as well at 4500 obm? I really like the feel of
a Bosch sander, but it only goes down to 4500 obm. Thanks for any input.

I have had some experience detailing and recall reading that you shouldn't
use more than 2000-2300 obm or you run the risk of burning through the paint
very easily. I avoid this by using an orbital buffer which has provided
great results using Meguiar's products. I would start out by renting
something like that and see if it does the job you want, the Imparts/Griot's
are nice, but may be overkill. Also, they require extreme care when using to
avoid the paint burning situation. I remember European Car did an article on
detailing and Meguiar's a few years back. I plan on getting a decent
polisher (PC) next year when I start doing more detailing. I'd definitely
keep it spinning low. Kai.
