I've got one of those nifty timing lights that allow you to "dial in"
the amount of advance that you want, and then you would set the marker
notch as normal.
My normal procedure is to zero out the timing light and set the timing
to the stock setting. From there I ramp it up to 12-14 degrees of
advance in 3-4 degree increments. Otherwise the notch jumps well out of
the view window and I start getting confused. <grin>
So the best way I can answer your question is, I am running 12-14
degrees of advance beyond what the stock setting is. (Does this mean I
could be running a total of 18-20 degrees of advance?)
Caveat: I only run it this hot when I know what quality of gas I will
be getting, and I am probably going to be running it on the track. For
normal day to day commuting, I usually run 6-8 degrees of advance (by
the above method) to make up for stop and go traffic and sometimes
questionable fuel.
HTH, YMMV!
