Rob:
I've done little research on this and here are your options:
1. Buy brighter bulbs ($15-$20 each)
You can buy 60/100 watt bulbs which give you more light through crappy
lenses, hence more white diffusion on the road. I've done this and it helps
a little. But is still not very good. Additionally, although the mechanics
told me the wiring could handle this the connectors were a little brown
after 1.5 years or use.
2. Install the big round Auto Cross lights on the front of your car. Use
these instead of your regular lights. I don't know how expensive this is
but if I were to guess: $150 for both lights, $100 Labor and wiring.
Personally, I couldn't do this because I don't like the way it looks.
3. Install really good driving lights in the fog light bay (PIAA) This
should run you about $220, and $25 to install. This may be your best value
upgrade! I know that PIAA just came out with a light which will look
relatively similar to the trapezoid fixtures in there now.
4. Install the euro H4 lights (single bulb). These lights cost between $390
to $420 pair plus $50 to install and change wiring. This is one of the
simplest methods and with provide excellent light. I did this and I am
content with the lighting. It is very different than any American (DOT)
light I have seen. There is NO white diffusion (distortion), the light
shines clear a very long way, and illuminates a wide swatch of ground
between five and 120 feet in front of the car (the fog lights become sorta
useless). Additionally there is a distinct cutoff at about six feet
(adjustable) which prevents shining other drivers and reflecting light back
at you (screwing with your night vision).
5. Install the dual bulb H4 lights (like those on the S2). $440 to $500,
you will need a new bumper too $800, and labor $200 (best guess).
In all cases I would recommend having any wiring changes done buy a
professional. If your wiring fries up you will someone to go back to. And
they usually won't do something that isn't safe.
Hope this helps!
