The size of the links across which we all communicate is measured in
some number of cycles per second, like 28800 bits (which, when
transmitted manifest themselves as cycles) per second. This is close
enough to the bandwidth you are talking about when you're talking
HAM-talk that it is commonly referred to as the *bandwidth* of the
connection.
We are all (me sometimes more than others) wasteful of the cycles with
trivia like the NASCAR pissing contest, hence the term waste or
bandwidth, or WOB.
