With the bilsteins, you don't need the bump stops which
are part of the stock boot assembly. When I put the
bilsteins on my 83 ur-quattro(with prog eibachs), they
came with replacement boots which just slide over the top of
the strut piston. I spoke to a Bilstein engineer this past May
when I put bilsteins on my 86 coupe GT and he said the
same thing I heard previously, bilstein struts have the bump
stop built into the strut so the external bump stop is no
longer needed. Another bilstein instruction is to NOT put
oil into the strut as some other manufacturers recommend.
These shocks don't need the oil for cooling and it can
damage the strut insert.
If you are running this setup and stock bump stops, I
could see how it would be bouncey. Also my springs
were seated in the strut assembly very tight when
assembled. Didn't have any slop. If the wire is really
smaller, are you sure you didn't get a set for a 4000q?
BTW, even I think my setup could use some help. It
seems bouncy under some conditions and teeth jarring
at the same time. Eric, have you worked out an
ur-quattro setup yet?
