S4 steering squeak

It's not the steering wheel housing, it's the transverse steeering dampener
(hydraulic) sitting above the rack thats the cause. When it was off it had
lousy dampening and some play which matched the clunk in the steering. 

Question is: Can I ignore it or is it important to replace it? Anybody else
have this feature in their cars? When I call mechanics and say I have an S4,
why do they change the subject? Methinks ignorance is the culprit!
