Help! Rear Hatch Locking Problem 91 Coupe Quattro

Last night I accidently closed the rear hatch on my 91 coupe quattro and a
piece of nylon (the shoulder pad of a duffle bag) got caught in the locking
mechanism.  Now the rear lock will not open.  In every position, when I
insert the key and press, I get no resistance at all, and the lock acts as if
it just will not respond.  The piece of nylon is firmly held by the locking
mechanism.

Has anyone had this problem before?  Any ideas on how to fix it?  This is a
tough predicament that I don't know how to resolve.

I would greatly appreciate any advice anyone has!
