How to read the timing marks

Simple question.

Last weekend I changed the timing belt and valve lifters (and water pump
and camshaft oil seal and valve cover gasket). Since I had the timing
belt off and the camshaft out of the car, it all had to be retimed when
I put it back together. I did this by turning the crankshaft that the
0 was flush with the trapezoid that projects into the window:

    +-------+
    | \___|
    | 0 |
    +-------+

and the dot on the camshaft pulley was level with the top of the head,
and the center of the distributor rotor was aligned with the dot on the
body of the distributor (eyeballing it). I think all this is right.

After putting it all back together, I tried to check it with a timing
light, but am a little confused about what marks indicate true TDC and
what marks indicate 6 degrees BTDC. Should I be seeing the dot level
with the head and the 0 on the flywheel centered in the window? What is
the vertical line on the flywheel, that is somewhat to the left of (i.e.,
retarded relative to) the 0?
