Hesitation

Hey Guys,
     I have a problem with my 82 Coupe GT.  The car starts right up 
first thing in the morning.  After letting the car warm up for a few 
minutes and I start to take off the car accelerates fine.  After  I 
stop for a light, sign, etc.  and start to go again the car hesitates 
real bad.  Another problem is when I shut the car down for a few 
minutes to an hour and go to start it again later, it takes forever 
for it to start back up, maybe 5 to 7 seconds.  What could this be?  
Are there problems I can check for myself?  I could really use some 
help on this one.  Thanks a lot.
