please, no offense at this illustration anecdote. No one will ever know
whether you are right or wrong here, with deference to the fact that your
guy said they did mess with the sensor.
I once put my car (82 coupe) on the lift next door to ascertain the source
of a big exhaust leak. When I brought the car down, the starter was dead.
If I had been a "normal" customer, what would I have thought? My starter
worked when I brought it in, and didn't when I picked it up! I am not
trying to absolve the mechanic here of possible guilt, I just want to point
out that "proof" in a case like this is a bit more subtle than it seems.
Your car is six years old, so maybe the sensor went poof when they tried to
adjust it? I guess I'm just saying be mellow while you try to get them to
do it for free - because if they really really didn't break your car (and
they might not have) you're not going to make the best impression and might
not want them to work on your car for a few years...
That said, good luck getting to the bottom of the issue.
