Not _always_ true!  In particular, Mann has sold some very low grade filters
in the U.S. for Audi and VW applications.  The Mann "house brand" didn't have
the anti-drain back valve and, at least as important, had only about 40% of
the filter media area of the original equipment units.  This information is
several years old, but I have no reason to believe that manufacturers don't
offer multiple levels of filter quality, depending on the name, the
application and the outlet to whom they are sold.

Buy on faith or reputation, but not on price alone.
