Yes, I have, many times. Nothing holds the rear of the console except those two 
screws. You might be struggling with the sigarette lighter harness (3 wires), 
which is rather short and does not allow to lift the console for more than 3-4cm. 
I usually take a drop light, look inside through the gap and disconnect the 
harness. You should have enough room to slide yous hand in it.
