Re: Throttle Body Wedgies
In a message dated 96-11-05 22:58:04 EST, you write:
<< On the inside of the throttle disk itself, in the lower half of it, you'll
find a
restrictor. It's a metal segment, shaped like a wedge, same dia. as the
throttle
disk, about 10mm thick in its lowest part, and is attached to the throttle
disk
with two 4mm screws. Remove the restrictor, cover the screw holes in the
disk with
the same screws (you will have to find two 4mm nuts in order to do this) and
enjoy
a quicker pedal responce.
I have no idea why Audi added this restrictor the first place. When you open
up
the throttle this restrictor keeps the calibrated gap between the throttle
and the
inner bore very narrow for quite some time, and only when the restrictor
clears up
the "floor" of the bore, the gap starts to really open up.
Without the restrictor the gap openes immediately after you apply your foot
to the
right pedal. I've had it done several months ago now and really do like the
difference it made.

..... Might want to hold off on that mod, or at least have someone do a b4
and after.... That wedge is there to help transition throttle response in
the mid rpm ranges, esp when on boost... I did this mod several years ago
(welded the holes and ground them flat), and really didn't notice a big
difference, other than a little more noise and a slight stumble during
various throttle transitions... When I went to the schrick, it really wasn't
noticeable tho.... At WOT/Full boost, it is prolly a good thing since you do
have an effectively larger area for air to enter, still not a significant HP
increase to justify, in fact, even with the wife's RS2 and IA stage II, I
left the wedge in there.... Getting the gasket first is KEY to this
exercise, don't assume ANY dealer to have it in stock....
Nice post tho Igor....
